Jorna Newberry ‘Waru- Looking After Country’
Jorna Newberry was born in 1959 from the Pitjantjarrra community, Angus Downs, Northern Territory. Newberry began painting in the mid1990s at Warakurna under the instruction of family members including his famous late uncle, Tommy Watson. Her paintings depict inherited stories from Irrunyti- important women’s sites, meeting places and gathering sites as well as seasonal changes on country. Waru depicts the seasonal burn off used to take care of country. Newbury’s work has sold to many notable collections in Germany, Amsterdam, Paris, Switzerland and New York. Newberry’s work is recognised not only as cultural records within the traditional Indigenous painting spectrum, but also as distinguished art pieces in the broader context of national and international contemporary painting.
