Aaron Tjapaltjarri

To be Auctioned on July 25th 12 Noon

Hailing from the Papunya area, Aaron Kingsley Tjapaltjarri was born in 1963. The son of the prominent artist George Tjungurrayi, Tjapaltjarri paints stories of the Tingari Cycle (the creation era), a right he has earned through his initiation status and family lineage. Tingari Dreamings relate to sacred men’s business and tell of the Tingari’s travels through the region creating landforms and establishing the law. These stories of his ancestral lands include references to men’s body paint and the Wunda, a camouflage shield design.

Tingari exemplifies Tjapaltjarri’s use of distinctive linear formations to represent contours of the desert landscape; its soakages, sand hills and creek beds; and travel paths, mapped by his ancestors. It doubly signifies ceremonial body paint designs, and the long angular brush strokes emulate the traditional techniques of body paint application, used for ceremony and hunting. The colours used reference those pigments that naturally occur in clay and charcoal, and each hue has a historic significance: orange and brown represents the earth, while black is the colour for men.
