Kate Petyarre was born in 1963 at Boundary Bore on Anmatjerra/Alyawarre land, central Desert. The artist draws inspiration from neighbouring saltlake regions with the changing water table conditions producing intricate salt patterns on the land. Depicted is the artist’s totem, ‘Atwakeye’ or Bush Orange that grows near sacred women’s cave sites called Awoolya located on the artist’s homeland in the site Entiebra in central Alyawarre Country. Katie paints her abstract interpretation of her totem utilising intricate fine lacelike threaded dotwork and the management of space to highlight the Atwakeye.
Kate Petyarre is represented in the permanent collections of the Art Gallery of NSW and winner of the City of Hobart Art Prize in 2012.
